On Saturday April 11 through Sunday April 12 the LHS girls and boys ultimate Frisbee teams played in a large, competitive tournament that brought out the best in both teams. The girls’ team won the East Tournament last year, and began the day on Saturday with high expectations. Saturday was a huge success for both teams, with the girls’ winning all three of their games putting them in a high ranking for Sunday. Almost everyone scored on the girls’ team despite strong winds all day on Sunday.
“The conditions weren’t very good, and we struggled in the wind but I think everyone on the team improved immensely and gained confidence,” said senior and captain Emma Capra.
Unfortunately the team had their first loss of the season in the semifinals to Fairview High School. Their last and fifth game of the tournament was one of the toughest of the past few seasons, with difficult competition and weather conditions. A technicality ended up hurting the Lions in the end, ending the game.
Nevertheless, the team is scheduled to play Fairview again next week with full intent to do their best and win.
“We played our hearts out and had some amazing plays by everyone on the team. It was an overall success,” said senior Bianca Banuelos.
The boys’ team also did well with a second place finish. They are hoping to utilize their wide range of skills this season, and were able to grow and learn in preparation for state.
“I feel like I contributed by scoring points, blocking disks and passing to my fellow teammates, I also feel like my team made me a better player,” said senior Dominik Bernal.
The ultimate team has a history of always being a powerhouse and this weekend was no exception
“The team did amazing and was full of great effort,” said Bernal.
Both teams look forward to the rest of their season to continue dominating the field and their competition. After a few more games both teams will be heading to state. The girls hope to defend their state championship title, and the boys hope to step it up even more.
