Fans have anxiously been awaiting nearly three years for the premiere of the fourth season of the popular BBC TV show Sherlock, and they were not disappointed when the first episode of the fourth season, “The Six Thatchers”, was aired on Sunday.
In the fourth season, Sherlock Holmes (Bennedict Cumberbatch) and his accomplice John Watson (Martin Freeman) finally return to the streets of London to continue their work as detectives. Beginning from where they left off at the end of season three, there is a new dynamic to the way things run on Baker Street. John Watson and his wife Mary are facing the trials of parenthood, while still finding time to guide Sherlock through his adventures in the aspects which he is less keen on. Sherlock busies himself with menial cases, constantly keeping a weary eye out for any remnants of Moriarty and his plans. However, he maintains his determination to keep the vow that he made in the season three finale to protect the Watson family. In this episode, an unlikely spectre from Mary’s past comes back to haunt her, and the well being of the entire Watson family is put into jeopardy. Sherlock is determined that he will protect them, but at what cost?
This much anticipated season premiere was thrilling, and it seemed to take on a darker tone than in previous times. The relationships between characters are forever changed as a result of some of the dramatic plot twists. This episode left fans with many more questions to ask than were answered, conveniently hooking them for the next two episodes to come.
