Girls swim takes on Arapahoe and Heritage

This Saturday, January 21, the girls swim meet took on LHS’s two sister schools Arapahoe and Heritage high schools in the LPS invite. It was a tough meet for the team, as they had a meet the previous day and were missing a few of their swimmers. Despite this, there were still some swimmers that were able to come away with a win in their event.

By the end of the meet, LHS ended up in third just behind Arapahoe with Heritage getting an overall score of 171 points, Arapahoe with 118 points and LHS with 115 points. Both Arapahoe and Heritage’s team are larger than LHS’s, and despite Arapahoe brining just their JV, they were still twice the size of LHS.

Despite the loss and slower times from the team, many swimmers were able to take away wins along with being able to put together relays that may be able to qualify for state.

Junior Reganne Fornstrom placed second in the 100 butterfly and was only one second off of the state qualification time. Other swimmers who did well in an individual event were senior Emily Sanders, who won the 100m backstroke, and Lydia VanKooten, who placed first in the 100 breaststroke.

Some of the relay teams also managed to do well in this meet. The A relay placed second in the 200 medley relay and the B relay placed 5th overall, but managed to drop 24 seconds off of their time.

LHS also took first and second in the 4X100 freestyle relay. The A relay consisted of senior Sarah Fantle, Fornstrom, VanKooten, and Sanders who took first place in the event.

This event was important for the team because they were only a half second off of state qualification time. They will compete in this event in a few weeks in hopes of making state. If they were to do so it would help the team tremendously as it would allow some of the alternates to swim at state even though they don’t have any individual cuts.

Despite coming in last overall at the meet, the team was still able to take away wins in some events. So far this season the team has been going strong with many members already qualifying for state and others close to qualifying.
