Speech and Debate competes in Boulder

On Saturday January 29, the speech and debate team went to Fairview High School in Boulder to compete. Senior Samantha Burk placed in sixth Program Oral Interpretation or POI and junior Avery Zieper also placed sixth in her event impromptu.

This is the first time that the team has gone to this tournament at Fairview. It was a long day for the team, as they met at LHS at 6:15 in the morning and they didn’t get back until midnight.

“It was a long tournament and it just ran really slow, but it was fun to hang out with the team all day and be able to go to Bolder with them,” said senior Brisa Banuelos.

Overall this tournament was one of the lower placing for the team. There were many schools that went to the tournament including Heritage High School, the majority of the DPS schools, along with a few further away schools such as Summit High School.

This was the first time that Zieper competed in the impromptu event.

“It was really cool that Avery was able to break because it was her first time competing in that event and it is really hard to break your first time that you are competing in an event” said Banuelos.

This season has gone well for the team as they have had someone break at every tournament this year. The speech team has particularly done well and has had a lot of success throughout the season.

The next tournament is the DPS invitational tournament which will be at Denver School of the Arts.
