Cross country races in Liberty Bell

The cross country team competed at the annual Liberty Bell meet held at Heritage High School this past Friday. This large meet drew 88 teams from all over Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.

As LHS attends this meet annually, the course has become pretty familiar to members of the team. It’s one of the first meets of the season, as well as being one of the fastest. It’s a great course for runners looking to PR.

“Liberty Bell went really well! There were lots of PRs on the team, and it was a lot of fun. The team really worked hard and pushed themselves on this course in order to get fast times,” said senior Addi Iken.

Senior Addi Iken pushes to the finish.

Junior Christian Sapakoff had a very impressive eighth place finish in the division three boys race. Iken pulled off another amazing race. She was first place for the division three girls, a full 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

“I was very pleased with my finish. I got a new PR which was really exciting. Unfortunately, I missed the school record by seven seconds, but it’s a step in the right direction, and I feel strong, fit, and healthy going into the season,” said Iken.

Overall, it was an excellent team effort and there was lots of support for one another. Only two seniors are on varsity this year which means this team has a bright future.

They are looking forward to this season and building a strong group to move forward in the coming years.
