Wednesday is a new series on Netflix that shows a new side to the classic Adams Family story. The show focuses on Wednesday Adams and her life at a boarding school for the outcasts and weirdos of the world. The well-known director Tim Burton fails to disappoint Adams’s family fans in accurately portraying Adams’s kooky and unique nature.
Taking a closer look at the plot, Wednesday is no doubt a weird and peculiar character. She is never seen without wearing black and looking deathly pale. The series takes a look at the Adams family in a more modern and relevant way. Her parents enroll her in Nevermore Academy which they both attended and Wednesday is not very keen on this. The school is filled with vampires, werewolves, sirens, telekinetics, and seers like her. Wednesday is able to see the future through visions which help her immensely throughout the series. While Wednesday is the focus of the series, you still get to see classic Adams family members like Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Lurch, and others. Additionally, you get a glimpse at young Morticia and Gomez Adams and their time at Nevermore Academy.
Another reason this series is so well done and successful, is it’s cast, which is to be expected when being directed by Tim Burton. Wednesday Adams is a very hard role and demanding to play. Jenna Ortega takes on the role and leaves no crumbs. She accurately portrays Wednesday and includes her classic dead stare and even shows off some of Wednesday’s unusual dance moves. Jenna Ortega is not the only talented actor in this cast. The show includes actors such as Emma Myers, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, and Joy Sunday. What I think is most interesting is that Christina Ricci plays a teacher at the academy. For those who don’t know, Christina played Wednesday Adams as a child in 1991. This goes to show that the Adams Family has been a well-loved family and the roles have been passed down through generations.
As someone who is constantly watching new shows and movies daily, I was very impressed with how the creators were able to modernize such a beloved series. I would recommend this show to anyone who feels like an outcast or a little bit odd. Anyone who loves dark themes and the emotional roller coaster this show will take you on. All in all Wednesday Adams is a series that should be on everyone’s watchlist.
