This year Conor Wherry broke the school diving record which was held for many years. He transferred to our school last year so this is his first season diving for the LHS swim team. Throughout the season which started in February, he has worked on perfecting his diving form and skills.
“I think it’s like the most fun sport I’ve ever played,” said Wherry.
The judges score the dives based on form on a scale of one to ten. A four is good but a six or seven is proficient and a ten is considered “textbook form”. Wherry broke the school records in April and then again at the state competition last weekend. Wherry broke the records by receiving sixes and sevens across the board on his dives.
When asked how he feels about breaking the school record Wherry said, “It still doesn’t really feel real.”
A lot of time and dedication went into practicing his dives and eventually breaking the record. Wherry wants future divers to understand that you can’t just show up twice or three times a week and get really good at it, especially for something as focused as diving.
Wherry said, “Show up every day and just put everything into it.”
