The night of January 9, the LHS wrestling teams faced off against Smoky Hill High School. The girl’s team won, with a final score of 30 to 6. However, the boy’s team fought well, but lost. Their total score ended with 19 points to LHS and 58 points to Smoky Hill.
Part of the girl’s team’s success and the perseverance of the boy’s team is owed to the wrestling team’s coach, Ronnie Koys, who is known for promoting positivity on the team.
“Well, with Ronnie’s positivity, it’s never just one type of positivity,” Senior David Cruz said after the duel. “And how that helped me throughout all my years with Ronnie, is it really did increase my mentality to be stronger, and to push myself even more, and to come back, and to feel as Ronnie’s part of the family.”
Junior Mimi Boon had a similar response.
“It’s helped me improve in my wrestling and figure out how to get better throughout the seasons and just make me better in general, on the mat and outside the mat.”
The wrestling team’s next event, a tournament, is on January 11. Over 20 schools will be attending the event, hosted by Chatfield High School.
