The show follows five friends in their late twenties navigating their lives after college, and what it is like to live alone in New York. The characters include:
Ted Mosby (the main focus of the show)
Ted is the main character of the show, and he’s the narrator throughout the series. The plot follows him and his friends as he tells his children the long story of how he met his wife, who is the mother of his children, hence the title. Mosby is a romantic and spends most of the show looking for his perfect match.
Robin Scherbatsky
Robin was introduced to the group following a date with Ted. She moved to New York City from Canada, which is mentioned a lot throughout the show. She begins as a side character, mostly associated with Ted, but she grows to become close to every other character, impacting their lives and hers as well.
Lily Aldrin
Lily is a close friend of Ted’s. They met in college because Lily began dating Ted’s best friend, Marshall. Lily works as a Kindergarten teacher, and throughout the show she also shows a passion for painting. She later becomes very close to Robin, as well as everyone else in the group.
Marshall Eriksen
Marshall is Ted’s best friend. They met in college when they were roommates and remained friends throughout the show. He’s often the more sensible one of the group, and can always be seen with spouse, Lily. Throughout the show Marshall is studying to become a lawyer, and he also is interested in protecting the environment.
Barney Stintson
Aside from Robin, Barney was the newest addition to the group. He prides himself on being rich, and he wears a full suit every day. He likes to plan elaborate schemes for the group to try and accomplish.. Barney’s favorite way to pass time is hitting on women at their local bar.
While How I Met Your Mother seems to be the stereotypical sitcom, it is way more than that. It displays failure, grief, life, death, change and new pathways. The characters all go through completely different pathways of life, displaying different lessons and experiences. You can: laugh along with Barney through his girl-crazy schemes, relate to Ted in his unsure pathways and romantic journeys and you cringe along to Marshall and his random jokes. You can also admire the dedication of Lily’s relationship with Marshall, and lastly you can watch Robin grow as a character, while the seasons go on. Whoever you are, you should give How I Met Your Mother a try, it is so worth watching.
