Saturday, August 24 Marching Band placed first in the 4A Division and first overall. Holly Rossman won Best Drum Major award for her performance.
The State Fair is the largest band competition in the State, with twenty-three teams performing both in a parade and on stage.
“The moment when our name was called for the first place prize was really powerful because it sunk in that everything we’d been working towards had paid off,” said senior Donna Sawicki.
In addition to learning the music, Marching Bands incorporate many different elements including marching in different formations as well as color guard. All of these elements help to create a dynamic performance.
“Color guard is the biggest visual element of the band. We accent the music and make everything pull together with emotions, and color, and movement. Competitions bring a lot of excitement to the team, but it can also be pretty nerve racking, which is why it’s important to remember that we are all in it together, “ said Sawicki.
The competition is early in the school year, which gives participants the opportunity to see what they need to work on as the season progresses.
“We have a strong emphasis on making sure our tone is spot on. We are also very big on helping each other out. Always supporting each other is the foundation of making sure our performances can be the best that they can be,” said senior Steve Rojas.
“Winning the state fair was definitely a great way to start our season, and hopefully we’ll continue to see success as the season progresses. I’m so excited to see what happens,” said co-Drum Major Holly Rossman.
Students were able to see the Band’s performance at halftime of the first homecoming football game September 6. Marching Band’s next competition is the Friendship Cup on September 7.
