The Oscars: the movies of this year most likely to be nominated

As 2019 comes to an end, award season for this year begins. The Oscars, one of the most anticipated annual award shows, don’t happen until February 9th, 2020. The nominations don’t come out until January 13th, 2020, but people all over the internet have already begun to predict which movies this year will be nominated for multiple awards and which ones will score big in February.

For a film to be submitted to the Oscars, it has to be shown in a theater in Los Angeles County for a minimum of seven days at any time in the year it has to be submitted with a form to the Academy. This means that blockbuster movies most people have heard of during the year and have seen in theaters are eligible to be submitted to the Academy. Additionally, movies from Netflix and Amazon could be eligible.

I think a first strong contender that could be nominated for many awards is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino himself could get a nomination for directing and writing the screenplay, along with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio for their performances in the movie. I also think that the costume, hair and makeup, sound and editing will be rewarded. Overall, it will probably be nominated for Best Picture.

Other films that are strong and could be nominated for Best Picture are Parasite, a film by Bong Joon-ho that was praised for its acting, writing, visuals and direction. It’s also predicted that Marriage Story and The Irishman, both of which are streaming on Netflix, will be in the running for Best Picture. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are praised for his role in Marriage Story, while the writing and direction of The Irishman are in good standings.

Although there’s a few anticipated movies still to come out before the end of the year, they haven’t been forgotten. In November, Ford v Ferrari and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood are expected to exceed expectations in acting, writing and both could be nominated for Best Picture. In December, Cats, Little Women, and 1917 are highly anticipated. Cats and Little Women for their visuals and costumes, while 1917 is in the running for Best Picture.

At some times, the Oscars can be extremely hard to predict, and with the absolute abundance of movies that come out in a year, some always get left behind. This year has shown us some truly remarkable work, but it’s ultimately up to the Academy.
