The Lions Roar staff rates popular Easter treats

Easter is a holiday widely celebrated around the world in various countries with an abundance of traditions. In the United States, many families celebrate Easter with the tradition of the Easter Bunny. A mysterious rabbit brings children candy, sweets, and toys the night prior to easter. These sweet treats often include chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, Peeps, and Reece’s eggs. It can be debated whether these candies are the delicious snacks most children dream about, or if they simply don’t live up to the expectation of rich and decadent candy everyone hopes for.

Luci:

Multicolored jellybeans

The Easter bunny does a fantastic job doing what he does best, don’t get me wrong, but he should rethink some of his candy choices… like jellybeans. Jelly beans are disgusting!!  Sorry to those of you who like them but freedom of speech comes in handy when talking about this candy. No rhyme intended. Jelly beans are a popular candy liked by many people around the world. Jellybelly, is the most popular Jelly Bean manufacturing company and they have come up with the weirdest flavors ever, some of them being Margarita, Tabasco, Pancakes and Maple Syrup, and MORE. Cherry is the best due to its perfect flavor and simple color, which is the one I will eat. Besides that, no. Unfortunately, the visual appearance of most Jelly Beans is the deal-breaker for me. I mean, how could I eat something that looks like rotten cheese, ewww. Also, the texture is kinda funky, it feels like I am eating the candy that turns into gum, but it’s not gum. While I can rest while eating a cherry-flavored jelly bean, I will not let my guard down with these weird candies. BEWARE!

Olivia:

Reese’s Eggs are objectively the greatest peanut butter candy and perhaps the best part of Easter for those of us who do not partake in egg hunts. Regular Reese’s are fine, but the peanut butter to chocolate ratio is all off. If I want to eat a mouthful of chocolate, I find no shame in downing a Hershey’s bar. But when I reach for a Reese’s, I want the flavor combination that Butterfinger’s can only dream of. While the peanut butter and chocolate of normal Reese’s are distributed unevenly due to their classic ridges, Reese’s Eggs have cracked the code by sporting simplistic equilibrium. And they’re not trying too hard; the ridges on classics are tasteful (no pun intended), but when it comes to their Easter counterparts, the flavor can speak for itself. No fancy ridges here, just pure rectitude. Furthermore, they don’t lose their appeal with time. You binge a handful, feel good, then feel bad, then feel very bad, and be fine again all within the span of an hour. They never become too much, and they’ll always have a seasonal holiday charm that maintains a sense of novelty. I have absolutely no connection with Easter. And I mean no offense when I say that as a Jewish person, the holiday has no significance in my life, religious or otherwise. But Reese’s Eggs, in their momentous and oh-so-delicious form, make this day worth it.

Cadbury Eggs mostly taste like chocolate and sugar, because that’s what they are. But the magic of Cadburys isn’t their taste but the fun that they are to eat. My own memories of Cadburys are finding them in my easter basket after a scavenger hunt on Easter morning. Though they are accompanied by Reeses and Peeps, I always go for the eggs first. It’s the kind of spectacle that I’ve enjoyed since childhood, of biting into the chocolate and finding the gooey “egg white” cream and the orange yolk, which is really just fondant. To me, that kind of enjoyment can’t be matched by any other Easter candy.

Peeps are one of the most classic Easter candies you can buy today. They’re simple, yet delicious. Soft marshmallow covered in sugar, what could go wrong? Peeps are nostalgic, and definitely the best Easter candy out there. Before I wrote this review, I already ended up eating half of the Peeps in the container, because they’re just that good.

As I ventured out to King Soopers to purchase Peeps for this review, I noticed that there are some new kids on the block. Next to the original Peeps, I saw fruit punch, hot tamales, sour watermelon and party cake flavored Peeps. I didn’t try any of these, but maybe they’re good. Or maybe they aren’t. Honestly, it’s always best to stick to the original.

I always assumed that everyone loved Peeps, but it has come to my attention recently that there are a few Peep haters out there in the world (and in the classroom). I would like to wholeheartedly disagree with anyone who dislikes Peeps, because it doesn’t make sense. Peeps don’t contain coconut, peanuts, almonds, or anything else that people usually dislike in candy. It’s just marshmallow and sugar– and who doesn’t like marshmallow?

Another great thing about Peeps? They’re versatile. If you leave Peeps out in an opened container for a few days, they get stale. Usually stale is a bad thing, but Peeps are arguably even better when they’re stale. They gain a chewy and crunchy texture that is very good. In addition, have you ever tried making Peeps smores? I highly recommend it.

For all these reasons, Peeps are a fantastic Easter candy. You have to get some.

Dove solid milk chocolate bunny

Hollow Easter bunny chocolates and solid Easter bunny chocolates are both very prominent candies in today’s society. In families that celebrate Easter, some parents traditionally give their children chocolate Easter bunnies to celebrate. A hollow Easter bunny chocolate is very interesting because the texture of it is very crunchy and crisp. The chocolate is tempered and this ensures a nice crack when the chocolate is bitten into. A solid Easter Bunny, on the other hand, is more difficult to chew. It is not tempered, but when biting into it, you get a mouth full of delicious, rich, decadent chocolate. Both of the bunnies are similar in price when buying the same quality of chocolate. A Dove solid chocolate bunny around the same size as a Godiva hollow chocolate bunny is roughly the same in regards to expenses. The creaminess of the hollow chocolate is unmatched. A mouthful of solid chocolate sometimes is slightly overwhelming. Although, when enjoying solid chocolates you get a greater overall quantity of chocolate and it’s more filing. Ultimately, hollow chocolate Easter bunnies have my vote for the best Easter candy. The silky smooth texture of tempered chocolate is hard to beat!

CONCLUSION: As of Sunday, Easter will officially start! In the meantime, head over to the grocery store and pick up your favorite candy, and don’t forget to try the Hot Tamale peeps. They sound absolutely “mouth-watering.”
