On February 22nd, Russia invaded Ukraine for the third time in the past 20 years. This time, Russia has demanded more territory from Ukraine than they ever have in the past. This has also already been a very deadly conflict, with the casualties in the tens of thousands (including soldiers, citizens, politicians, and children).
What is going on right now in Ukraine is both hopeful and dreadful and an outcome is still not in the clear yet. This may become a year-long conflict. Both sides are suffering yet pursuing and fighting hard.
Let’s start with Russia. Russia has been using cyber-warfare to deceive the Ukrainian population. Using “deepfake technology” (a photo or video manipulating someone’s face into a different context/making them say something they did not say), they made a video of President Zelenskyy asking for Ukrainian soldiers to “surrender.” Obviously, not many fell for this, and Zelenskyy himself called the attack “childish.”
Ukraine is fighting very hard to fend off the Russian invaders. They’ve been using the Ukrainian Foreign Legion to its advantage, and a lot of experienced fighters have joined alongside the Ukrainian forces against Russia. One of the members is one of the most experienced snipers in the world, a Canadian Elite sniper known as “Wali” has joined the fight against Russia.
More information has come out, however, a lot of misinformation and propaganda from both sides have been bringing more attention to the truth. One mystery is the alleged “Ghost of Kyiv” has been rumored to be a fake propaganda attempt by the Ukrainian government. This still isn’t deterring the Ukrainian forces, as morale still remains high in Ukraine.
