As many know, on March 22nd, a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado experienced a mass shooting incident. Unfortunately, ten people lost their lives. One being a police officer, three being employees, and the other six innocent by-standers. The gunman carried a Ruger AR-556 Pistol as well as a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. Although he carried the 9 mm it was not believed that he fired this specific weapon. He however fired the Ruger AR-556 repeatedly. Colorado has seemed to have a striking pattern of mass shooting in the last 5-7 years.

First Platte Canyon High school, Columbine, then leading into the Deer Creek Middle school shooting and the Aurora movie theatre shooting, then unfortunately years later repeating this pattern with Arapahoe High School and STEM school. Followed by floridana women Sol Pais threatening to once again harm the lives of Columbine High School students and staff. Now the Boulder king sooper shooting. Many people can tell that this pattern has increased and studies show that once a mass shooting occurs, it is likely that more will follow the pattern. Extremely unfortunate.

Everyone has their own staid point when it comes to this subject. This subject is something none of us want to be trained on or run drills on. However, it is a necessity for most of us. Especially students. As many of us have continued to grow up, we have practiced endless amounts of “secure perimeter” and “lock down” drills to be ready for the case in which our school is targeted. None of us like these drills and although we feel most prepared in this series of situations, it is still triggering and frightening for most of the students who have been in school ever since these drills have been around. For the majority of the student body, being so prepared for this is almost numbing, almost of sense of being normal.

So many wonder “When will these drills stop?” or “Will my kids have to practice the same drills and routines?” The answer is most likely yes. Although heavier gun laws are being place, background checks are being run, and more constant awareness is being brought up, people still make insane actions in which to hurt others. Many people blame gun laws, however Colorado has some of the most updated and relevant gun laws compared to other states. It should not always be the default way of blame to go after the Gun salesman, the gunsmiths, nor the background agencies themselves. As of Colorado state law, any said person wishing to purchase a fire arm much go through a background check before being allowed to complete that purchase legally. Also corresponding with the ATF as the regulatory agency.
