Boys basketball take down Standley Lake for senior night

On Wednesday night, the boys basketball team took over Standley Lake 45-37 in their last regular season game. Tonight, they also celebrated the seniors on the team which included Kai Bertram, Trevor McMillan, Zach Oraker, Sam Jones, Jacob Watkins, Jake Jones, Jakob Bubelis and Tayvis Sagrillo-Smiley.

“We’ll probably make the playoffs after that game, so we’ll see next week. I think we have a lot of really good players coming in,” said senior Jake Jones.

This game started off with very high energy, as the bleachers were filled with students and parents coming to support the Lions. The band also played during this game, which kept the boys’ energy high. The team also wore old-school uniforms during this game.

As for the seniors, most of them want to continue being involved in athletics, whether it’s through continuing to play, such as Sagrillo-Smiley, or study different aspects of athletics, like Oraker, who will go on to study Sports Management.

At the end of the first quarter, the Lions were slightly behind 5-9. Both teams displayed great defense which made it hard for either team to get to the basket. By halftime, they were up 16-15 but lost the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter with 26-29. In the last quarter, the Lions racked up the points and kept the lead, ending with a score of 45-37.

“It was a good game, it’s probably the last game I’ll ever play on that court, so it’s great to finish it with a win,” said senior Kai Bertram.

As the energy began to sink during the game, the crowd was right along with the Lions and helped them get back on their feet if they ever fell behind.

Since this was the last regular season game, the boys now have to wait to see if they make it back to the playoffs, but they are optimistic that they can make it based on this game.

“I think we’re working hard for the playoffs, I think the future of the Littleton program is going to be a lot brighter since we’re making the playoffs this year,” said senior Sam Jones.

If the boys make it to the playoffs, we can expect as much energy and hard work going into those games as we’ve seen culminate over the season. Over the weekend they will find out if they go and we can see everything come together for the biggest games of the season.
