Two weeks ago the LHS DECA team went to their state competition at the Broadmoor hotel up in Colorado Springs. The team had to qualify through winning at the District level or creating a written event that got them accepted into the state competition.
There were many successful students from our school at the state level with many of them moving on to the National competition in Anaheim, California in late April.

Angelina Holm, a senior in her third year of DECA, placed well at the state competition and will be moving on to the national level. Holm’s goal was to make the team efficient and well promoted in her last year on the team.
DECA is one of the biggest clubs at school and one of our most successful career enhancing organizations. The club fosters a large sense of community and fun for every competition they attend.
“My favorite part about DECA competitions is being able to hang out with friends in between events,” said Holm.
Senior Sasha Maxwell joined DECA this year and competes in the Principles of Marketing roleplay event. In this event you sit in front of a judge and get a prompt and it gives you a story to follow. You play the role of an intern or a lower level worker and explain to the judge how to solve the problem.
Maxwell says it’s important to “show evidence of creativity and critical thinking,” to the judges.
Another successful senior was Owen Ervin who is finishing out his second and final year on the DECA team. Following his performance at DECA state, he will be going to the National competition.
Ervin competes in the Principles of Finance event at competitions. Ervin enjoys the competitive spirit and being able to feel like he is with people in the business he wants to grow in. His goal for this year was to do as well as he could.
Ervin will be majoring in international business and looks forward to using the skills that he has learned in DECA to further his education
The National DECA competition will be in Anaheim, California from April 28th to May 1st. Cheer on the remaining DECA competitors at the national competition.
