In the Fall of 2020, Netflix graced us with a new movie restarting the fascination with the ‘Holmes’ mysteries. Except this new story had one major difference, rather than being about Sherlock, these new stories are about his little sister Enola.
The first ‘Enola Holmes’ movie received a 91% on rotten tomatoes and set them up perfectly for a sequel in the franchise, an opportunity which the producers took and created a sequel that is even better than the original.
‘Enola Holmes 2’ starts off an undetermined amount of time after the first movie finished. She begins to do the exact thing she said she would become a detective.
The new movie does a great job of keeping the successful aspects of the original. We continue to see flashbacks both to the first movie and later in Enola’s childhood. This helps the viewer to see parts of Enola that we hadn’t seen before.
The mystery in this new movie takes on a new level that the first hadn’t explored. While still a missing person case, a large part of the conflict hinges on reform which was a very hot topic in this time period. It very clearly shows the two sides of the argument and the lengths people will go to in order to get their point across.
Most of the main characters from the first movie were present in the new one, the main absentee being Mycroft which I was not sad about. To replace him came a new cast of ensemble characters. They each played a large role in the plot of the movie rather than just people taking up space in the shot. They brought sadness, curiosity, and utter betrayal.
‘Enola Holmes 2’ is an exciting new mystery to add to the Holmes name that you won’t want to miss.
