Girls basketball loses 57-58 to Standley Lake

On Wednesday night, the girls basketball team suffered an extremely close loss of 57-58 after being ahead most of the game and persevering through each quarter. After a few losses but a win on Monday night, the girls had high energy going into the game and were hopeful about the outcome.

“Going into the game I felt pretty confident, we just came off a good win on Monday, so I thought we had good energy going into the game,” said senior captain Susie Puchino.

The girls record is now 9-7 and after tonight’s loss they are optimistic and motivated to keep improving in order to get back on a winning streak.

“For the majority of the game we played well, and we’re trying to get out of this slump we’ve been in and we did that until the very end,” said senior captain Ellie Fuchs.

In the first quarter, they were not far behind with a score of 13-14. In the second and third, they pulled ahead with scores of 33-26 and 45-41 but in the final quarter the Gators pulled ahead and left with a score of 57-58.

“I think there are times we played some really strong defense and we were shooting the ball pretty well, and then there are other times where we just weren’t focused enough,” said senior Hannah Peterson.

Since the team got off in the season on the right foot, they are motivated to win more games and continue to the playoffs.

“I’m still excited to keep playing and going into future games, I just think we need to work on playing consistently and not having mental lapses,” said Puchino.

While the crowd during this game was quite small, they rallied together and made lots of noise for the Lions. After the game, when they filed into the downstairs locker room, students were congratulating the players and coaches on their hard work.

Along with Peterson, Fuchs, and Puchino, senior Brooke Wolanin scored lots of points and helped the Lions stay ahead during the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

For the rest of the season we can expect good things from the Lady Lions as they continue to work and be motivated to improve.

Their next home game is Saturday, February 8th at 1:00 PM against Wheat Ridge.
