Grayson Manuel wins the 2025 Colorado High School Chess Tournament

Just a short time ago, sophomore Grayson Manuel won the Colorado High School Chess Tournament. While the talented star has been playing since he was eight, this is the first year he took home first.

Manuel has always loved playing chess, and is an important member of the LHS chess club. “Everyone should join chess club. It’s very fun, they meet Thursdays after school until about like 4:45,” said Manuel.

He plans on continuing his chess career at least until he becomes a master. To do this you need a reading of 2,200, and he currently has a reading in the 1960s. “It’s still pretty far away, but I’ve been improving so maybe I can get there,” says Manuel.

The game was six rounds and Manuel was never one hundred percent sure he was going to win.

” I definitely could have lost several of them, but luckily my opponents messed up.”

When asked if he had won any other tournaments Manuel said, “I won the closed scholastic tournament, which is the top six players from Colorado that go play, but until recently I have not won any.”
