LHS DECA has recently competed at the state competition, with several members placing high enough to participate in national competitions.
DECA is an activity that students from various high schools participate in to prepare themselves for possible future careers in fields including marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
The DECA state conference took place February 23 through February 25 at the Broadmoor Resort, with 33 LHS members competing.
Third year DECA participant junior Zoe Matteo won 1st place in her event, Food Marketing. After placing 1st in the district competitions earlier this year, Matteo was given the opportunity to compete in the state competition. Through her years doing DECA, Matteo has felt her skills in communication, interviewing, and presentation have improved significantly.
“I want people to know that DECA is a great opportunity because you have the opportunity, even before districts, to try out so many different events,” said Matteo.
Junior Caroline May has also participated in DECA since her freshman year and placed 5th in her event. After her performance in her freshman year didn’t make it to state, she competed at an international level during her sophomore year.
“The last two years I have found the event that I am currently in, which is the Marketing Communication Series. It really allows me to be creative and in creating marketing plans and promotional plans,” said May.
DECA advisor Jill France about the state conference said, “It went really, really well. In fact, we had 8 finalists and 7 are going on to the international competition.”
Students Andrew Desjardins, Axel Fontaine, Phoebe France, Grant Miskens, Sophia Held, Zoe Matteo, Caroline May will continue to compete at DECA nationals in Orlando this April.
