LHS’ production of “Into the Woods” has been nominated for four Bobby G awards, the high school version of the Tonys produced by the Denver Center of the Performing Arts, and on the night of the awards ceremony, May 26th, they will get the opportunity to perform.

“Into the Woods” was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design, Outstanding Performance by an Orchestra, Outstanding Achievement in Direction and Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical. Along with the other nominees for Overall Production of a Musical, the cast gets to perform at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on May 26th.

“I’m super excited. It’s something really vindicating because it feels like all my hard work really paid off here,” said senior Nick Hopper, who was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design.

Fifty schools are in the competition for the Bobby G awards throughout the whole state, and when each school has their production, four evaluators come to see the live performances. There are eleven categories and five nominees for each category.

“To get a nominee for the Overall Production, that is just off the chain. That’s like Best Picture at the Academy Awards. For the pit orchestra, I was extremely pleased on how well everything came together for them because it is not an easy show at all. The only thing we know score-wise is that the four evaluators who came to our shows gave the pit orchestra perfect scores, which I’ve never seen,” said pit orchestra director Don Emmons.

All of the productions at LHS are complete student work, with the exception of Ms. L, who directs them and Mr. Emmons who conducts the pit orchestra. At some other schools, professional set designers or musicians are hired to help but at LHS, every single performer and musician is a student. This makes these awards and nominations much more special.

“I definitely feel that Littleton is capable of winning. I am really hoping that we do win. A lot of the high schools we’re going up against are very good and I think that it would be really incredible for Littleton because it’s very strictly student work. Other high schools will hire adult accompanists or they hire adult craftsmen, so it’s not traditional high school theatre but Littleton is. I think they’re fully capable of winning in the future as well,” said senior Alicia Chavez, who, if LHS does win the award, will give the acceptance speech along with senior Grant Kinzie.

The awards show will happen at 7:00 PM on May 26th, and although you must buy tickets to see it, they are only $10 a piece. You will get a chance to not only see LHS perform but other high schools as well, and possibly see us win an award!
