LHS’s speech and debate team had a very impressive season, with a few of our students being offered the opportunity to compete at a national level this summer. Senior Perri Deshler, Junior Carly Calhoun and Sophomore Emmett Moxon will all be attending nationals this Summer. It will be about a week long and take place in Iowa this upcoming June.
Deshler has been doing speech and debate for two years and competes in humorous interpretation. In the most recent competition she presented a piece called “Don’t Play Games with Me”, by Matt Thompson. She reimagined the piece and brought her own flair to it. She presented it and won first place, giving her the opportunity to compete at nationals. This was a great way to end her final year doing speech and debate. I asked her about the highlights she’s had in the past two years, and she said one of her favorite parts is spending time with her friends.
Having people she was comfortable with “made the long competitions more bearable”, and she loved meeting students from other schools and being able to interact with them.
Calhoun and Moxon will also be attending nationals this summer. They compete together, and their category is duo interpretation. The duo performs a scene from something and do their own interpretation of that. Their winning piece was inspired by the parent trap, they came in a tie for second place. As a tiebreaker they did a run off with the other second place team from another school. They had to present their piece again to new judges. While they unfortunately lost the tiebreaker, the second place team wasn’t able to attend the national competition. This gives Calhoun and Moxon the opportunity to go compete this summer.
Overall our speech and debate team had a great season with many amazing moments. Great job to Calhoun, Moxon, and Deshler for being outstanding this season and best of luck at nationals!
