One of Littleton’s most recent additions, the Asian American Pacific Islander Alliance (AAPIA), had its first meeting at the beginning of this month. The group aims to educate students about Asian culture and to give the community a voice in Littleton.
Junior club member John Keran shares some information about AAPIA.
“The club is basically just about educating more people about Asian culture because there are many different cultures, it’s not just like Chinese people, Japanese people, South Koreans, there is a whole plethora of people out there that people don’t know about.”
Senior club member Elizabeth Doty explains what the club plans to do in future meetings.
“In our next meeting we’re going to try to bring in food or have people make food from different Asian cultures,” said Doty. “We’re gonna try to reach out to some people in the Asian community maybe around Littleton and we’re gonna see where it goes.”
The group is also planning to look into and discuss current events in Asia.
The AAPIA further diversifies Littleton’s range of ethnic inclusion and representation. Asian Americans are a significant part of Littleton’s population and the group is working to educate non-Asian students about the cultural experience that so many identify with.
“It’s mainly about just getting the representation out there and not just reaching out to other Asians in this school, but to anyone who’s interested in learning about the Asian experience because I feel like it’s not really talked about,” said Doty.
The club meets on the first Thursday of every month from 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm in room 1311.
