On the last weekend of January, our Model United Nations team went to a conference in Boulder. Although everyone had successes, one junior has been knocking the competition out of the park.
For those of you who don’t know, Model UN consists of writing a paper that represents your assigned country’s stance on a provided topic. Participants will be provided with an information packet to structure their argument and must also complete outside research to write their “position paper”. At the competitions, participants speak out for their country using the information in their paper. The paper is graded by administrators at the event.
Junior Andrew Macedo won the Outstanding Delegate Award for representing Saudi Arabia. This is no participation award. Recipients of this honor must be accurate in their presentation and get the policy through that the country would want. In addition, they must have successful negotiations and diplomacy. Participants can also win Best Paper and Best Delegate, the highest award you can get.
This was Macedo’s first year participating in this club, so to receive this award is very impressive.
“[Model UN]’s a lot of fun, it’s a really good club. It’s a lot more relaxed…but it’s a good time,” said Macedo.
The next and final Model UN conference will be February 26 at Fossil Ridge, so be sure to wish your fellow students good luck.
