The best part of hybrid learning was in fact not sleeping in 3 out of 5 days a week, but in fact, that we could arrive at school 5 minutes before the bell rings and still get a spot in the front. In the past few weeks since returning to school in person as a whole, it is harder to get a spot anywhere.
There have been numerous occasions where students have been late to class because of a parking situation. I have heard stories in the hallways about people who are having to park at Taco Bell, the apartments, and even at the car dealerships.
Junior Alicia Chavez says she arrives at school around 8:10 to find parking. Her biggest issue is that some people park crooked or too close to the line. When she parks next to someone she has to park badly to create some distance or she will park normally and receive scratches on the side of her car from doors slamming into it.
Sophomore Mackenzie Rodriguez also agrees saying there is no parking. Also claiming if students were able to park in the athletic parking lot that would solve a lot of problems.
Senior Molly Gosling when asked if the parking situation affects her, she answered, “Yeah. It sucks.”
Many students, including my IB Psychology class, are curious as to why we are not able to park in the athletic parking lot. The teachers can receive priority in their own assigned rows, but otherwise a majority of the lot is empty. By using the rest of the athletic lot, this would solve a large amount of parking problems for LHS students to be on time to class, no accidents in the parking lot, and not being fined.
Students should be able to park in the athletic entrance lot. There is no real reasoning behind why we are unable too. Even if the athletic entrance lot is closed, students can walk around the building and still make it on time to class rather than driving around for 15 minutes to find a spot. In the past, students parked in the athletic entrance while teachers parked in the front lot. This demonstrates that there is no issue with parking students in the back.
There are not enough parking spots for students when teachers park in the forum either. When parents, especially before and after school, park in spots to drop off/pick up kid this takes spots away from students as well. The line to pick up students who cannot drive is extremely long especially since the bus line is long.
Because of these issues, it takes a long time to get in and out of the parking lot and kids are arriving late to other after school activities or to class.
