This column is like my farewell to Littleton High School. LHS is the place where I sat through Integrated Science with Ms. Rankin and watched somebody tear up a $20 bill to scare us at freshman orientation. I did the “do it cheer” in the pep assemblies and walked across the street to King Soopers even though it was snowing. But then, I’m sure you all remember, on March 13 my high-school movie experience closed its doors as I walked out the front entrance. And it didn’t get back to normal. I “did” my online school work, opted out of finals, and did my 3 walks a day. I came back to hybrid learning and watched my friendships change because of the alphabet split. I went back online to back to hybrid to a sort of back in person.

And then I started my senior year, the supposed best year. Which in a way it was, but we all had to get adjusted to the new normal of high school. And I think part of the reason why senior year was so great was Newspaper. Newspaper has taught me so many important lessons, like how to go up to strangers and ask them to pronounce the word “pecan.” I know how to get my voice heard and how to stand up for my own opinions, to put myself out there. And I couldn’t think of a better group to do it with.

All sappiness aside, here are my words of wisdom to all of you who will still be here next year. I’ve been here five years, so I might actually know what I’m talking about. One: Embrace change, such as Ms. Benton becoming principal or wearing a uniform in gym class. Some things are out of your control, and you just have to make the best of the situation. Two (and this one is inspired by my mom): when you make a commitment, don’t quit, finish it through. I’m talking about that club you joined or the sports team you made it on. You don’t have to do it the next school year, but make sure you give it your all for the time that you’re there. Instead of joining a service club and never showing up, do at least the bare minimum and come to meetings. Do an outside project if you can, if you have a free moment. Join that sports team and give it your all because we’re all trying to make a difference and find ourselves. In a way, school is a team sport, and it’s hard when your teammates don’t participate. Of course I can give you the basic advice to join stuff, but I think the real value lies in committing and giving it “the good ol’ college try,” give it 100% while you can. Feel free to disagree, I’m just sharing my thoughts, but I hope those who read this at least take time to reflect.
Now switching gears back to those in Newspaper, I will miss you all and will always remember the laughs we shared. And above all, I still stand that Safeway is the best grocery store.
