Because Dr. Oaks will be retiring this year, the administers have decided to allow staff, parents, and students to be a part of the principal interview committee and process. This is important for us students because the interview committee gives us an opportunity to have a say in who will represent our school in the next years.
The district has also stated that we’re allowed to have four students on the committee who are nominated by their teachers, those students will be reviewed and chosen by the assistant principals. Once members are selected the district will send out emails to the new members, staff, parents, and students to notify them of their acceptance in the committee. In preparation for the actual interview process, there will be a virtual training session on February 24, 2021, from 3:45 pm to 6:00 pm. The actual interviews will be held later on March 1, 2021, from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. It’s important to note that the committee cannot proceed with interviews if any member is not present. If you are extremely busy, for example, you’re a mid-season athlete or a member of the band, then being a part of the committee may not be a smart decision.
For those who are interested and able to participate in the interview committee, a google survey was linked to the email containing information about what aspects are important for a new principal to have at our school.
Although the form for student input closed on Monday the 15th, students will still be encouraged to give feedback as the interview process progresses and below is a timeline of the entire process. There’s no denying that Dr. Oaks has made a great impact on this school and helped create a warm and friendly environment that is unique to our school. As students, it’s our responsibility to maintain this for incoming freshmen, eighth graders, and those who transfer to our school. At the end of the day, students have to be involved in the decision for a new principal because we represent the school in the most accurate ways possible.
