The Animals of LHS

Also written by Char Fraietta.

Recently, there have been many animals on LHS grounds that do very interesting things.

Several of them are squirrels, the most frequently sighted being a very large one who is often seen eating entire burgers and most recently a bagel on Thursday. He walks around the front lawn scouring for food dropped by students. Sometimes, he will walk up to students and beg them for food. Where he got the bagel from is unknown, but he was attracting a lot of attention among students, with many of them snapping pictures and giggling at the sight.

There is also a pair of geese who have a nest on the roof of the school near the language classrooms. These two are seen walking around the school grounds and taking naps on the front lawn together. They tend to ignore students, but sometimes you can find them staring at students in classrooms and the front lobby.

The most bizarre sighting in the past couple of weeks is a lone turkey sitting on the roof of LHS. It sat there for about half of period 6 today, and then flew off. Hopefully it comes back to continue to amuse students just like the geese and squirrels.

While watching the animals might be fun, we’d also like to remind students not to touch, pet, or try to hand feed the animals by hand. They are still wild animals and do bite. There is a poll to name the bagel squirrel on one of the LHS Instagram pages, @lhs_squirrel_page, where submissions of photos or videos of any animal spotted on the grounds is gladly accepted.
