On January 12th the long awaited Mean Girls movie hit the theaters. I went to go see it the day it was released and here are my thoughts on the movie musical adaptation:
Mean Girls (2004) is an iconic movie, most people have seen it and many love it. The story follows Cady Heron, a high school transfer student from Africa and her experience navigating the “jungle” that is high school.
In my opinion, the film embodied the essence of the well known and loved Mean Girls, while modernizing certain aspects of the story. It paid homage to the Broadway version of the film, with some of the original songs reappearing in the new movie as well as a few new songs that make this film stand out.
Before seeing the movie I saw a lot of controversy over it being considered a musical. I think that while there were a few musical numbers, the entire movie wasn’t focused around songs, and the theatrical aspect wasn’t too much to the point that it became annoying.
For the most part, the casting was spot on. Many of the actors brought new looks to the original characters, but they all remained true to the iconic personalities of their respective characters. Some of the original characters made an appearance, like Lindsay Lohan playing the part of the mathletes announcer.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie, and while there are some parts that I would change, I think it was a nicely done adaptation of a classic film.
