Littleton’s class of 2022, along with its many other accomplishments, has had three standout scholarship recipients.
One senior, Kathryn Braddock, was awarded the Littleton Public Schools’ Spirit Scholarship which is a $1000 scholarship awarded to one student from each LPS high school who is pursuing a career as a teacher. It is provided through the Colwell family, in honor of Karen Colwell who was a teacher at Heritage High School.
Braddock was surprised by being awarded the scholarship but after finding out, she said “I was very excited. I was a little nervous to go to the LPS Foundation dinner.”
Braddock has been highly involved during her time at Littleton. “I’m involved in a lot. I probably can’t even list off the amount of clubs I’m in and I do swimming. I also try to stay at the high school while completing four other college classes at ACC.”
Braddock plans to continue her dedication to the education environment after high school, saying “I’m planning to go to Penn State Abington. I’m planning to major in Elementary Education and Special Education.” Braddock intends to use her degree to become a teacher.
Another senior, Elly Scala, was awarded a full-ride scholarship to Colorado State University which was provided for by the Sean Lough Foundation. The scholarship is funded in honor of Sean Lough, who tragically passed away, with recipients being selected for similar characteristics such as having high grades and dedication. This was Scala’s first year at LHS after moving from Arizona. In Colorado, she’s been interested in skiing and a climbing club that she’s joined.
The interview process for the scholarship included multiple interviews with the final one not actually being an interview but rather a surprise for Scala to tell her she got the scholarship. Scala shared her experience with finding out she received the scholarship, “There was the whole scholarship committee, family members, my counselors, a few teachers, and the vice principal which was super cool. They gave me a giant check and told me that I got the scholarship.”
Scala added that “I was very surprised. I was trying to not get my hopes super high but I did obviously really want it. The whole day afterward, I was very grateful and excited about college and my future.”
Scala plans to major in Business at CSU in the fall.
A third senior, Jonathan Rodriguez, also got surprised with a scholarship. Rodriguez was awarded the Daniels Scholarship. The scholarship is in honor of Bill Daniels who was a well-recognized entrepreneur and veteran. Winners of the scholarship can use it at any accredited and non-profit college in the US. It covers up to full tuition and other expenses for four years of college.
Rodriguez’s surprise was broadcasted on 9NEWS along with multiple other newly awarded Daniels scholars.
When commenting on the surprise, Rodriguez said “I found out I won the scholarship when I got invited for what was supposed to be a second interview but later found out it was a ceremony announcing the Daniels Fund Scholars,” adding that “I felt relieved when I won the scholarship. I was excited also because now I had the chance to pursue a higher education.”
Rodriguez plans to attend CU Boulder to study Civil Engineering in the fall.
