The leaves are starting to turn colors, the pumpkin spice latte is back at Starbucks, and my TikTok fyp is full of Halloween costume ideas. It’s fall, which is almost everyone’s favorite time of year. Except for mine.

The leaves changing in the mountains

Reason #1: School starts back up in the fall, and I am still stuck in summer. It is so hard for me to find the new school year rhythm after I had just spent 3 months doing whatever I wanted. I am not used to studying and managing time and doing homework; it’s very challenging when going from nothing to everything with no break.

Reason #2: That’s another thing: there are literally no breaks in the fall. There’s our fall break, which is only two days. We don’t have another break until Thanksgiving, which is so hard to make it to. The one pro though is homecoming week, which is a nice fun break from normal school. Now that homecoming has happened, we’re in for the long haul.

Reason #3: The days are starting to get shorter, so the sun is setting earlier. It throws me off every night when I can’t tell what time it is. Although I do like the leaves changing, they all fall off by the end of October, leaving the trees bare and sad-looking.

Reason #4: Halloween is not quite my favorite holiday. When you’re in high school, all the fun parts of Halloween are done. There’s no trick-or-treating, no Halloween party at school, and not everyone dresses up. The only aspect left is scary movies, which I don’t enjoy. All that’s left for me is candy.

Reason #5: The pumpkin is overkill. Everything is pumpkin everywhere, and while I like pumpkin bread, I don’t need it in my pasta or chips.

I know I sound like I’m complaining, but there are things I do enjoy, like the weather. My favorite part of fall though is I know I sound like I’m complaining, but I don’t get the hype. I am always sad this time of year, and there are not a lot of great aspects. I do enjoy some parts of all, like the weather and Thanksgiving, so I’m holding out for the last week of November. Even though I won’t be, I hope the rest of you are enjoying this spooky time of year.
