Welcoming the fall season, with the leaves changing color, the air crisp and cool, and the pumpkin spice lattes, what’s better than being able to enjoy the scenery of a good book as well as all the beautiful things fall brings?
With fall coming into view, there are many classics recommended by publishers and bookstores. These include:
The Great Gatsby ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby is a book set in the Jazz era in New York. The characters within this novel are based on groups of social class and wealth. Jay Gatsby, a millionaire during this time period, is narrated by Nick Carraway, and as their story unfolds, so do many secrets, affairs, and obsessions. This romance is a classic.

These books include:
The Night Circus ~ Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus is a novel written from different viewpoints. It’s a romance fantasy set in the 19th Century. This novel is about two magicians with opposing magic types, set to duel in a magical battle to their death. One will outperform the other.

Next up, recommended by freshman Jillian Kosanovich, is Vicious written by V.E. Schwab. “The setting of this book is what really sets the fall theme,” said Kosanovich
Vicious ~ V.E. Schwab
This novel is about two college students who create superhuman abilities, struggle through learning what it means to be alive, and become archenemies. It’s a perfect novel for anti-heroes, and those who appreciate good, evil, and everything in between. It’s not always our abilities that determine the course of our lives, but more so the choice each individual decides to make. If you enjoy this novel, read the rest of V.E. Schwab’s series, The Villains.

Our third recommendation is provided by sophomore Annika Brown. “The mystery in The Inheritance Games is what would make this book good to read in the fall. I would recommend this to you if you read the Shatter Me Series,” said Brown.
The Inheritance Games ~ Jennifer Lynn Barnes
This Young Adult Mystery gives off a twisted Cinderella story vibe. There are high stakes that come with reading this book, mostly for the characters within the pages. Our main character just wants to make it through high school. Her overall goal is to receive a scholarship to go to college. That’s until a billionaire leaves her his inheritance. However, in her journey to determine why he left her his inheritance, she must solve his puzzles and codes. In the process, she is portrayed as a con woman and someone is determined to take her down. She must play the game to win. Stay on your toes with this plot twist of a book, full of romance, secrets, and drama for days. There are three books in this series, book number one being The Inheritance Games, book two, The Hawthorne Legacy, and three, The Final Gambit.

The perfect fall book contains plot twists, mysteries, and thrilling events. Junior Vince Fleming has two recommendations to wrap up our books to add to your Fall TBR List.
The House in the Orchard ~ Elizabeth Brooks.
The House in the Orchard is “a very compelling story with a few twists and great overall characters” said Fleming. The main character, Peggy, inherits Orchard House from her widowed husband’s aunt but comes to the conclusion that there is something odd about the house. She finds the Aunt’s diary and does some digging to discover the violent tragedy experienced by the Aunt leading the audience to wonder who they can truly trust.

Another great fall read is The Shining by Stephen King. Vince Fleming says it’s the “chilling tone, environment, and adventure you take as a reader diving deeper that helps you truly understand the madness of the novel.” King leads you through the supernatural happenings that occur over the family’s visit with Jack Torrance. In this thriller, there’s a lot to look forward to, and there’s a movie you can watch after reading the book, just in time for Halloween.
Have fun with your fall books Lions!
