The state of Women’s Basketball is in a better place than ever before. Throughout this March, the Women’s NCAA tournament has been on full display with superstars everywhere you look.
The tournament is headlined by Iowa’s Caitlyn Clark who is taking the world by storm with her incredible outside shooting ability, drawing comparisons to Steph Curry the NBA’s all time 3 point leader. Along with her incredible passing ability, she’s an overall offensive superstar, breaking the all time NCAA scoring record across men’s and women’s games.
The tournament has been only televised on ESPN, which has caused a surge in social media posts, drawing people to the tournament in order to watch their television station. There have been narratives of a rematch of last year’s championship in the elite 8, to Junior Paige Beuckers. She is one of the most polarizing players in the sport, who tore her meniscus last year, and now carries the UConn Huskies to the final four going 23-2 in their last 25 games.
The respect and attention received from Women’s Basketball within the past year, has been a huge leap and an incredible achievement towards the progress of basketball, and women’s sports as a whole. College isn’t the only league getting respect either, this past NBA all star break, the WNBA’s best shooter Sabrina Lonescu took on Steph Curry in a 3 point shootout, with both stars opting to shoot from the NBA 3 point line in order to make no excuses. While Steph Curry won, Sabrina would have tied for first in the NBA 3 point contest a few moments prior.
Hopefully these recent events can inspire a revolution in the sports world to accept women’s sports, compared to the hate received within the past 50 years.
